Elín Hansdóttir

YOU, mixed media, 2004

The Árnesinga Art Museum

„Art doesn’t exist without the viewer“. With this statement Elín Hansdóttir expresses the credo of her Art. Her single show at the Arnesinga Art Museum with the characteristic title „YOU“ was aiming on the realization of the relationship between work and viewer. The homonymus installation was an interactive manifestation of this relationship: entering the central room the spectator was confronted with a yellow field on the floor and a white globe hanging from the ceiling. In the moment you stepped on the carpetlike field the globe began to shine. The light got brighter and brighter the closer one reached towards the globe. In another work she placed a sound in a specific spot in a room and the visitor had to stand on tiptoe to listen to it. The reactions of the other people who entered the room without knowing what went on, but recognizing a funny looking person on tiptoe and with that the own awareness as recipient was the intention of this intervention.

Elín Hansdóttir, who currently lives in Berlin, is the youngest participant in the Reykjavík Arts Festival 2005. In an old house near Isafjörður she is installing a meandering corridor in which the visitor immediately looses his orientation. Again the viewer is drawn into a physical dialogue with the work encouraging the possibility to re-evaluate ones relation to space and place.
